Walking into The Concourse Project for the start of Indo Warehouse’s Spice Trade Tour, I already knew I was in for something different.

Before the show, I had the chance to sit down with Indo Warehouse and learn how they have built a community around South Asian dance music, creating space for a sound and culture that had not always had that representation in the dance music world.

Desi Vibe Tribe also played an important role in bringing the Austin event together. The collective continues to bring world music to the city, from South Asian sounds to a wider range of global influences. I love seeing more of that becoming part of Austin’s musical landscape.

Music is always evolving and diversifying, and that is part of what makes it so powerful. Just like food, wine, art, or travel can introduce us to another culture, music can transport us somewhere completely different without ever leaving the room.

The Spice Trade Tour builds on that idea, drawing inspiration from the historic exchange of cultures, sounds, textiles, spices, and traditions across South Asia, the Middle East, and beyond. Indo Warehouse brings those influences into a modern dance music setting, creating something rooted in culture while still looking forward.

One of my favorite moments of the night happened from inside the DJ booth. I turned my camera toward the crowd and started panning across the room. The second people noticed the camera, they came alive. Hands went up, people started moving toward the lens, and everywhere I looked, people were completely locked into the music.

For a few seconds, I felt personally connected to the audience instead of simply observing them.

That moment really brought our earlier conversation to life for me. You can talk about community, culture, and bringing people together through music, but standing there and watching an entire room move together is something different. You can feel it.

Indo Warehouse had also told me before the show that creativity can happen anywhere. They had even started creating a new track in the car on the way from their hotel to The Concourse Project. Sometimes inspiration takes weeks. Sometimes it shows up on the way to the venue.

That unpredictability, the people, and the energy in the room are why I continue to love live music.
